Lee Bros.JPG - LEE BROS - Tin drivers lamp, 2 11/16 in. tall to top of lid, 4 5/16 in. tall to tip of spout, marked LEE BROS PLYMOUTH, PA on lid (This hard to find marking is one of two Lee Bros. lamp markings I’m familiar with. The one shown here is more the classic, better-known marking of the two. A second lamp marking includes the Lee Bros. Plymouth, PA stamping on the side of the font rather than the lid and a Pat’d April 25, 1876 date on the lid. The patent date refers to lamp patent No. 176,650 issued to John Q. Lee of Plymouth, PA on April 25, 1876 for an improvement to the lid that eliminates the solder joint on top. This lamp incorporates the patented lid design. Lee brothers John Q. and James, Jr. were born to Irish immigrant parents who came to Pennsylvania prior to 1840. The brothers were listed as tinsmiths at 511 Lackawanna Ave. in Scranton, PA in the 1870 Scranton City Directory. By the 1880 Federal Census, both were living in Plymouth, PA, John at the age of 36 and James 39. Each was married with children and John was listed as a tinsmith while his brother James was listed as a tinware hardware dealer in Plymouth. Their father James Sr. was age 71 and living with John’s family. Beyond that, little is known of the Lee brothers.)
